Thaipusam Festival

The Thaipusam Festival is a Celebrated mainly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil of Thai (Jan/Feb). ‘Pusam’ refers to a star that is at its highest point during the festival. The most significant aspect of the festival is the carrying of ‘Kavadi’ (burdens) by devotees, in which ‘Vel’ skewers pierce the flesh and are carried around as sign of devotion. Special prayers are held and meals are served to devotees and visitors at the Sri Maha Subramaniar Temple in Lok Kawi, located some 25km from Kota Kinabalu.
